Shoe Review! Tank Testing with the inov-8 Terraultra

I have always been a road runner, I didn’t even know what “Trail Running” was when I was doing the couch to 5K, I did one trail run in 2014 the “Run The Vyne” event and I only entered that one by mistake, I ran it in road shoes and found that my grip when going up the steep trail was lacking. I have run the St Michael’s Hospice Run every year since 2015 but that’s in a nice “flat-ish” field.

This summer I have been attending the Alton Sports Trail Series, I have found it quite fun to turn up at the store, try on some trainers that I would never have considered in the past and run in them, give them back and not get charged! You can’t go wrong.

Friday 13th July (scary for some) is the day I first discovered the “tank” of trail shoes, if they were a car they would be a Land Rover & if they were a Tank they would be a Challenger 1. Ladies & Gentleman let me introduce to you the inov-8 Terraultra G260.

I ran on this shoe first in the store on the day of the launch, I noticed for a rugged trail shoe they are very light, however you can tell by looking at them that they are “tough as old boots” even though they are new.

I didn’t buy them immediately, I wanted to have a proper go in them, so I waited over a month for the Alton sports inov-8 event on the 15th August. I ran in the inov-8 shoes that evening & I knew these were what I needed if I was going to do more trail runs. So the very next day I found myself in the evening with nothing to do, so I went out for a run in these “Tanks.” I ran over a number of surfaces & I have come to this opinion…

They are lower than my road shoes and feel heavier when road running, however running on a trail was incredible. I have always been sensitive when I have run over a bit of debris on the road because my feet don’t like it, however in the Terraultras they eat trail paths for breakfast. I swear I got faster on the trails than I did on the road, I was eating up the trails like a tank over a muddy field, on the trails the “bounce” I like came out and these heavy looking shoes became light and nimble, how do they do that?

Switching back to the road I could tell an immediate difference, which proves these are an off-road shoe first and foremost. To prove my theory I changed my route and ran over a public playing field, again the shoes came to life and over grass, heavy stone and mud they were fantastic, I was a different runner, which is odd because I like being me.

You will have to excuse my short fat hairy legs but I promise I was flying on the trails. My conclusion is these are a great trail shoe and I look forward to finding some trail races to do, I had good grip when needed and puddles and mud banks were not an issue, if you like off road then these are the shoes for you.

Alton Sports Ambassadors – Testing out the ON Cloudventure Peaks

On Thursday Aug 2nd, our intrepid band of Alton Sports Ambassadors assembled at Alice Holt Forest in order to meet up, touch base and road (well, trail) test the awesome ON Cloudventure Peaks. Oh, and have coffee. Can’t run without there being a coffee at some point.

After a prompt arrival – our Ambassador team who are based all over the South Coast congregated around ON expert rep, Carlos, who talked us through the shoe. It’s a super-light shoe that has great grip but can be used from short races – to all your super long marathon adventures! He talked about how the speedboard in all ON shoes will help propel you forward as well as the tough outside layer not threading if caught on a run.

  • Runner profile – Runners looking for a lightweight trail competition shoe with downhill cushioning
  • Goal – Reach places others can’t first
  • Heel-toe offset – 6 mm | 0.23 in
  • Weight – 260 g I 9.2 oz (US M 8.5)
  • Category – Trail

After a brief convo, the crew set off around the undulating Alice Holt trails! If you haven’t run there before then it’s a beautiful forest location just outside Farnham in Surrey. There’s a tough parkrun there – the course is fantastic. We set off around some of the other trails in order to give the shoes a good testing.

The great thing about running shoes is that they’re all different and if you don’t try to run in a few styles, then you’ll never find a shoe that you might love! Our Ambassadors (some who had never ran in ONs) agreed with this sentiment…

Sasha:

“Love the ON Cloudventure Peak. I got a pair last winter when the mud had got too much and I need a trail shoe with real traction. These didn’t disappoint. Great grip, giving real confidence on the trail but a smooth ride on the road as well. A fabulous all round shoe.”

Adam:

Adam went straight in the deep end and wore his for a 100 mile race the following weekend!

Shortly before taking on an Ultra Run along the classic trail of the North Downs Way, I discovered the ON AdventurePeak Cloud trail shoes.  This was perfect timing as I was still looking for the right soled shoe to deal with the hot baked uneven mud from the summer we had been experiencing. I am also not one to shy away from a bit of attention, so these bright orange, super light-weight trail shoes became my hot favorite to run in on the trails. Not just for the colour, the fit was comfortable too.  The low cut around the ankle allows for a full range of movement on a variety of rough varied  terrain. The sole is designed for multi terrain which is not out of place or uncomfortable on the road surface.  The unique CloudTec sole design gave me great cushioning and control under my feet whilst descending, yet remained firm enough for when powering through up  those hills. The ON AdventurePeak Cloud are like no other shoe I have worn before and are now my go to shoe when I hit those trails.!”

Adam also very kindly brought along his drone and got these cool pics…

Debs:

“I’ve managed a few short runs on the South Downs & Surrey Hills so far & loving the responsiveness of them, esp downhill. Still making my mind up on road to trail. Overall love them!”

Phil:

“So far really impressed with the ON shoes; lightweight responsive shoe with good grip and a great feel.”

Al:

Initially I was a little skeptical of the ON shoes concept, but my preconceptions rapidly started to recede once I the Cloudventure Peaks on my feet… Some shoes just feel ‘right’ as soon as I get them on my feet and the ONs definitely feel into this category. Out running they felt quite firm/responive but still with a comfortable ride from the suspended/sprung ‘lugs’ on the sole. They have been great on both trail and road surfaces, will certainly be doing more running in them!”

Dave:

“I am doing the Stockbridge 10K in September & I will be proudly wearing these. I found the “ride” very comfy and I had a spring in my step, the footbed is very bouncy & they felt like I had been wearing them for months not minutes. I was very impressed.”

Jhon:

“I’ve never ran in an ON shoe and they’ve a totally different feel to any other shoe I’ve ran in! Looking forward to trying them out at a parkrun / trail race soon! They’re so light and super-comfortable!”

So, there we have it! The ON Cloudventure Peak was a resounding success… but don’t take our word for it. Check it out online or pop into any of our stores and try it on!

A massive thank you to our Ambassadors for taking the time to test the shoes out… you’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the near future.
